Bordering on the Border

This week saw the final round of the Border league at Queensferry, with a huge contingent of runners making an appearance to ensure the various promotions and demotions. I fulfilled my promise again to Arwel and donned an 'Eryri' vest in an attempt to help secure promotion from the 2nd to the 1st division. The course was very very flat but quite nice, taking in the footpath alongside the river and then turning into an industrial estate before returning along the river to the finish. Both Abergele and Eryri were up for awards but they were joined by teams from Deeside, Wirral, Wallesey, Prestatyn, Denbigh to name but a few. Being a relatively fast and short race (4 miles) the pace was very high and I ws pleased with my time of around 25 minutes which shows that the mileage is paying off. We had a couple of small disappointments, with poor Gemma of Eryri having to pull out of the race due to politics, despite having travelled all of the way from Liverpool, where she is at university to compete in the event. She only needed to finish to gain a gold medal in her category, only to be told at the start that as she had recently transferred from Colwyn Bay, she would not be eligible to secure the series...this was so unfair and she was very upset and elected not to run and I don't blame her. This is the same situation that I found myself in late last year. Politics and sport don't mix! The other disappointment, was seeing Darren Blazier having to be administered 1st aid at the end. The count down to Manchester continues, with three weeks more training to go. I only hope that I enjoy it as much as I did my first Welsh outing last September!
