Pier Pressure

Since I have been running, I've always wanted to do the Pier to Pier. Its probably because its my local event and we don't have to travel very far to take part (about 2 miles). The other good thing was that Neale was also taking part, something that I thought I might never see, but contrary to this he was there at the start line at LLandudno wearing the infamous North Wales Road Runners vest.

Another good turn out for the club with 21 members making an appearance, its was absolutely fantastic to see all of those club vests at the start. I had decided to do this event instead of the Helsby half marathon as my training was running somewhat behind what I had expected. On the start line, I was joined by all of my rivals for the honours including Issobel Redfern, Sarah Ridgeway formally Kleeman, Rhian Roxburgh and Andrea Roberts. I knew that it was likely to be a close run thing as of course we were all chasing a victory on our home event.

It was quite a contrast, with me starting at the front and Neale stood at the back dreaming away as if he was waiting for a bus......The race started bang on the strike of one o'clock and we all took a brisk pace up towards the little orme. Sarah and I lead the women's field with Issobel and Andrea following closely behind. Rhian, unfortunately was forced out at the 2km point with a hip problem. Poor Rhian, she has had a run of bad luck in the past few months. The assent of the little orme was quite easy and Sarah and I managed to pull out 30 secs between us and the following ladies.

The decent down into Penrhyn Bay saw Sarah begin to pull away and I could not match her pace, however I decided to relax and consolidate my second place and attempt to maintain a steady run to secure 2nd and hopefully a sub-40 minute time.

Isobel and Andrea both pushed me all of the way to the line and I managed to secure my second place followed closely by the pair of them for 3rd and 4th respectively. I was over the moon and this race was exactly that. An on form field resulted in one of the closest races that I have competed in and I was pleased to be pushed right to the line.

As for Neale, unfortunately he was unable to realise his ambition of completing the route in sub-50 minutes but came home in a late 51. Good results by both of us and a fantastic event organised by Colwyn Bay athletic club with support from Abergele Harriers. And congratulations to Darren Blazier winning the event for the first time and securing a personal best as well.
