Getting a plane to an event is a little bit of a novelty to Neale and I and the trip from Liverpool airport to Belfast passed in a little over 25 minutes! We were joined there by at least 60 other athletes in the Welsh team for the annual Masters Cross Country international. Our opponents were the national teams of England, Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland and there were many ex-and current world class athletes.
I was glad to be joined there by several other girls from my age group who Ive competed with before and the team talk at the hotel on the night before, made me realise that being picked for such an event was an honour in itself. Everyone there was so proud to be, and some of the names I have read about in my short athletics career.
The backdrop for the event was the beautiful Stormont, home of the Northern Ireland assembly set in fantastic surroundings. Our race was three laps of about 2km and I was pleased with 27th overall in such a high quality field. The evening, saw us meet in the Europa Hotel in the centre of Belfast and we were joined by Dame Mary Peters (Gold Medal Winner 1972) for a fantastic night of food and fun. Nearly 500 people were there and the organisation was fantastic. I met many new friends and gained a completely new insight into Masters Athletics.
It was such a shame the weekend was so short, even Neale said how much he'd enjoyed the weekend, I only hope that I'm picked again for Swansea next season!
