I watched in horror as Paula Radcliffe hobbled her way through the last few kilometres to complete the marathon cause at Beijing. Whilst most people probably felt for her, I couldn't help thinking that her failure was covered much more extensively than the outstanding performance of Mara Yamauchi. Lets look at both scenario's...One famous athlete, rewarded for eternity with lucrative sponsorship deals and appearance money, following a one off world record in perfect conditions and not much else. The other , working by day and training by night, no real support to speak of and many notable results, achieved, quietly, with little or no press coverage and an unassuming manor. I give you Mara Yamauchi.....6Th overall, in a world class field....no excuses....no promises......and no disappointment....You are a credit to the distance running world!
As for me, I see Mara's commitment and determination as purely inspirational. It made me want to go out and run! And that I did, specifically last night when I endured another session on the track at Colwyn Bay with the speed merchants. For the first time I really enjoyed the track work and I am paying for it this morning with aching everything. With two weeks to go prior to the Welsh 10k road champs in Caernarfon, I feel confident that I can go out and enjoy my run and hopefully help North Wales win the team price. We certainly have a team to be proud of in the vet's section. If I can achieve a result individually in the vet section, then this will be even more of a bonus!
